According to the WHO definition, probiotics are "live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host". They are also called "friendly bacteria" or "good bacteria." Probiotics are commonly consumed in the form of either fermented products or dietary supplements.

 

The majority of probiotics are bacteria that are similar to beneficial microorganisms naturally found in the gastrointestinal tract. The two most common types of probiotics are “lactic acid bacteria” and “bifidobacteria”. There are strong clinical evidences showing that probiotics can balance the gut flora, relieve occasional diarrhea or constipation, promote regular bowel movements and enhance the immune system.
