Health Info  Nutrient Glossary  Choline

Choline is one of the essential water-soluble Vitamin B. While our body naturally synthesizes a small amount of this compound, we require external sources from our diet and supplements to meet our daily needs. Choline is used for developing and maintaining healthy brain cells through improving the signaling capacity, structural integrity and fluidity of neuronal membranes. Choline is also used to produce acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that is involved in neuronal networks associated with memory. Choline supplementation is especially important for fetuses. According to the Food and Nutrition Board of U.S., it is recommended for pregnant and lactating women to have a daily choline consumption of 450mg and 550mg respectively. In addition to brain development, choline protects our liver from fat accumulation. Vegetarians and people who over-consume alcohol are known to have an elevated risk of choline deficiency. Foods rich in choline are eggs, cod fish, chicken, milk, wheat germ, cauliflower and Tofu.
