Health Info  Nutrient Glossary  Phytosterols

Phytosterols is classified into either plant stanols or plant sterols. It is a plant derived compound that cannot be naturally synthesized by the body. It is commonly found in plants such as vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, grains and vegetable oils such as soybean or corn oil. It is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The main benefit of Phytosterols comes from its chemical structure, which is similar to cholesterol. Like cholesterol, phytosterols must be incorporated into mixed micelles before they are taken up by enterocytes. Phytosterols are secreted back into the intestine and attached onto receptors on intestines at a much higher rate than cholesterol, resulting in much lower intestinal absorption of dietary phytosterols than cholesterol. It is effective in maintaining vascular flexibility and promoting cardiovascular health. Adults are recommended to have a daily phytosterols intake of 2,000mg with a complementing low saturated fat diet. It may assist in stabilizing blood cholesterol levels. However, it should be noted that phytosterols only work on dietary cholesterol. In other words, it does not provide profound effects with low dietary cholesterol intake.
