Health Info  Nutrient Glossary  Flaxseed

Flaxseed comes from the flax plant that is native to the region ranging from eastern Mediterranean to India. It is rich in soluble fiber and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is an omega 3 essential fatty acid that may assist in stabilizing blood cholesterol. It can help reduce blood clotting and promotes healthy cardiovascular system. Flaxseed contains lignans, which is both a type of fiber and phytochemical that acts as a plant hormone. Scientific evidences show that it may help relieve menopausal symptoms and prevent cell variance.

Unlike flaxseed, flaxseed oil is the oil extracted from the seed and doesn’t contain fiber and lignans. It has a balance composition of omega 3 and omega 6. Omega 3, in the form of ALA, may assist in stabilizing cholesterol, thus is good for cardiovascular health.
