Fiber is the indigestible portion of plant foods. It can be classified as either soluble or insoluble. Soluble fiber may assist in stabilizing cholesterol and blood sugar. On the other hand, insoluble fiber is more important for the bowel health. It adds bulk to the stool, and thus promotes regular bowel movement and relief occasional constipation. It also helps to balance the acidity in the intestine and maintains the health of the colon.

Good dietary sources of soluble fiber include oats, legumes, fruits and vegetables. For insoluble fiber, good dietary sources include whole wheat products, brans, seeds and nuts. Generally, it is recommended to consume at least 25g of fiber daily.
