Health Info  Nutrient Glossary  Chitosan

Chitosan is a linear polysaccharide derived from the shells of crustaceans such as shrimp, crab and lobster. It is a type of dietary fiber made up of positively charged molecules. This gives chitosan the fat binding ability and inhibits the absorption of dietary fat. It can also slow down the emptying of stomach. Combing these effects, chitosan is often used for weight loss purposes. In addition, chitosan may assist in stabilizing cholesterol, which can promote cardiovascular health. Since chitosan dietary supplement contains shellfish ingredients, people who are allergic to seafood should not take it.
