Calcium is the most abundant type of mineral in the body andand about 99% of the body's calcium is found in bones and teeth. That’s why this element is essential for the development of strong bones and teeth. It is also important for nerve transmission, muscle contraction, relieving blood clotting and help ions transport across cell membranes.

The daily intake recommendation of calcium is 400 - 800mg for children and 800 - 1200mg for adults. Inadequate calcium intake will increase the risk of osteoporosis.


Foods that are rich in calcium include cheese, milk, yogurt, dark leafy vegetables and sardines. Foods that are fortified with calcium, such as juices, soy milk, rice milk, tofu and cereals, are also good sources of this mineral.
