Collagen is a type of protein that can be found mainly in the connective tissues such as skin, tendon, cartilage and ligament. It is comprised of 25-35% of the protein content found in the entire body and more than 80% of the skin. There are more than 25 types of collagens that naturally occur in the body.

Collagen provides structures to the body. It works together with elastin to provide integrity, firmness and elasticity to body tissues. Although the body can produce collagen naturally, this ability declines with age, thus wrinkles and lines start to appear on the skin and joint problems start to occur. To stimulate the synthesis of collagen, it is important to consume foods rich in lysine and proline such as lean meats and egg whites because these two types of amino acids are the building blocks of collagen. In addition, eating vitamin C rich foods can also increase the production of collagen.
